Truman Middle is a grades 6–8 school in Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) with 520 students, located on Benavides Rd SW on Albuquerque's southwest side. It operates within a district that ranks 55th of 87 in New Mexico (37th percentile, 2 stars), and its own 2025–2026 state rank is 169th of 191 middle schools (12th percentile, 1 star). That is not a one-year dip: Truman has generally sat in the bottom 10–20th percentile, with a best year of 24th percentile in 2014–2015, a low of 5th percentile in 2024–2025, and a modest uptick to 12th this year. Proficiency in 2025–2026 is well below district and state levels: ELA (NM-MSSA, all grades) is 26.53% versus 44.59% district and 44.66% state; math is 11.53% versus 27.69% district and 27.85% state; and 8th-grade science (NM-ASR) is 22.67% versus about 34% for both district and state. Math is the clearest weakness — 7th grade is 7.41% — though this year's 11.53% improves on 7.93% in 2024–2025 and 7.00% in 2023–2024. Nearly all students are economically disadvantaged (free/reduced lunch 99.62%), and the student-teacher ratio of 10.0 is relatively favorable, down from 10.8 and 12 in prior years. Compared with nearby same-district schools, Truman's 12th percentile sits above most peers. Jefferson Middle is the striking exception: with similar poverty (99.35% free/reduced lunch) and a higher ratio (12.3), it reaches 66th percentile, with ELA 50.47%, math 34.38%, and science 47.74%. Truman's science result is second among same-district peers, behind Jefferson, and its math is fourth, behind Jefferson, Garfield Middle, and John Adams Middle. South Valley Prep, a nearby other-district school, posts higher ELA and science with a much higher ratio. No reported student group exceeded the 14th percentile in 2025–2026.
