Summary

John Adams Middle is a 6th–8th grade school with 420 students on Albuquerque's west side, part of Albuquerque Public Schools, where essentially every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. Statewide it ranks 158th of 191 ranked New Mexico middle schools (17th percentile, 1 star) in 2025–26 — up from the 8th percentile the year before and its best standing since 2018–19, the second year of a recovery from a long slide.

On 2025–26 state tests, 34.83% of students were proficient in English language arts, 13.80% in math, and 19.30% in 8th-grade science — all below district and state rates. Math is the bigger concern: students here are proficient at roughly half the rate of their district and state peers, and 8th-grade math is just 6.19%, far below the school's 6th- and 7th-grade math rates even though those same 8th graders read at nearly the same level as younger grades. The encouraging news is the trend: reading proficiency has climbed from 17% to 34.83% and math from 5% to 13.80% over two years, gains about three times larger than the district's and state's over the same period.

Compared with nearby schools, John Adams leads its immediate neighborhood — its closest neighbors, Jimmy Carter Middle and Washington Middle, rank below it — but Jefferson Middle and L.B. Johnson Middle show what is possible with similar student demographics. Class sizes are a real strength here: a 9.7 student–teacher ratio, the lowest among comparable schools. English language learners and low-income students show the school's strongest results, while special education students remain the clearest area of concern.
