Summary

Janet Kahn Fine Arts Academy is a PK–8 school serving 389 students on Indian School Road NE in Albuquerque, part of Albuquerque Public Schools, and the largest of the eleven nearby schools it is usually compared with — one of only two in that group that continues past 5th grade. Nearly all of its students face economic disadvantage: 100% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–25, and the school has 11.2 students per teacher, close to nearby campuses such as Tomasita Elementary (10.8) and Mitchell Elementary (11.1). It has ranked in the bottom quartile of New Mexico schools for a decade, placing 291st of 346 (16th percentile) in 2025–26.

In 2025–26, proficiency trails district and state averages in every tested subject: 36.11% in English language arts, 19.37% in math, and 20.73% in science. The science gap is the widest, about 13 points, and among nearby schools only Hawthorne Elementary reports a lower 5th-grade science result (14.58%) than Janet Kahn's 16.33%; Mitchell Elementary (43.33%) and Inez Elementary (39.06%) score far higher. Within that same group, Janet Kahn ranks 7th of 11 in ELA but 5th of 11 in math, making math its relative bright spot. Alice King Community School, the only true structural peer (K–8, 384 students), outperforms in all three subjects, though just 30.99% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch versus 100% here.

Inside the building, results split sharply by grade. Sixth and seventh graders beat both district and state in ELA and math — 6th grade 51.85% and 7th grade 52.38% in ELA — while grades 3 through 5 and 8th grade fall below. That upper-middle-grade strength is the only place the school exceeds its benchmarks, and the 8th-grade figures appear to rest on a small number of students. Overall results have improved in absolute terms since 2022–23, but district and state scores rose too, so the school's percentile rank slipped from 30th to 16th.
