Summary

Martin King Junior Elementary is a K–5 school at 1301 Nicklaus Dr SE in Rio Rancho, NM, serving 569 students in Rio Rancho Public Schools. In 2025–2026 it ranked 92nd of 346 ranked elementary schools statewide—73rd percentile, 4 stars—up from 106th the year before. Its district ranks 29th of 87 districts statewide, so the school is outperforming a district that is already above the New Mexico average.

Academically, the school is comfortably ahead of both its district and the state in reading and math. In 2025–2026, 58.43% of students were proficient in language arts and 39.70% in math, compared with 54.07% and 34.72% districtwide and 43.34% and 25.54% statewide. Among nearby schools, it leads Maggie Cordova Elementary School and Puesta Del Sol Elementary by wide margins, runs close to Joe Harris Elementary, and trails Ernest Stapleton Elementary. Coyote Willow Family School, a smaller K–8 in Albuquerque Public Schools, posts much higher proficiency and is a useful “what’s possible” reference rather than a like-for-like peer. Grade-level results show ELA is above district and state at every grade, while 3rd-grade math is a clear strength. The weak spots are 4th- and 5th-grade math, which fall slightly below district, and 5th-grade science, the only subject below both district and state. Class size is high: the student–teacher ratio rose to 18.1 in 2024–25.

The recent trend is positive. All-grade ELA proficiency climbed from 49% in 2022–23 to 58.87% in 2025–26, and math rose from 34.02% to 39.62%. The school also reports uneven results for some groups: male students rank in the 78th percentile for effectiveness while female students rank 43rd, and low-income students fell to the 43rd percentile. A jump in reported free/reduced-lunch participation to 100% in 2024–25 appears to be a reporting change, not a sudden shift in student need. Bottom line: this is a solidly above-average, four-star school, top-quartile statewide and the strongest of the Rio Rancho Public Schools schools in its immediate area, though it remains below its own mid-2010s peak. Families should see strong reading instruction, improving math, and clear opportunities in 4th–5th-grade math and 5th-grade science.
