Summary:

Four high schools in zip code 07104 serve grades 9–12: Barringer High School, Technology High School, Newark School of Global Studies, and Newark School of Fashion & Design. Their 2025–26 test results show a strikingly uneven picture: Technology was above the state on several tests, while the other schools generally scored below it. The most important finding is that school results vary widely, so the area’s schools should not be treated as a single-performing group.

Technology High School stands out for test proficiency: it scored 84% in grade 9 ELA, 64% in Algebra I, and 40% in grade 11 science, compared with state results of 51%, 40% and 29%. Its ELA result was 69 percentage points above the other three schools’ average, and its Algebra I result was 24 points above the state. Barringer High School was at the bottom on several tests, including grade 9 ELA at 5% and Algebra I at 2%; these were 46 and 38 points below the state, respectively. Global Studies is a notable contrast: despite low Algebra I and science results, it had the highest graduation rate, 99%, and lowest chronic absenteeism, 2%.

Recent changes are mixed: the grade 9 ELA average fell from 35% to 33% as the state result rose from 50% to 51%, while the Algebra I average rose from 16% to 20% and the science average from 13% to 14%. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranks fell from 2024–25 to 2025–26 for all four schools: Technology from 44 to 59, Global Studies from 358 to 390, Fashion & Design from 383 to 399, and Barringer from 427 to 429. School size and income measures do not neatly track scores: Technology has a 15.2 student-teacher ratio and 80% free/reduced lunch eligible in 2024–25, while Barringer’s ratio is 17.2 and 60% were eligible; Global Studies has the lowest ratio, 12.3, and 84% eligible.
