Summary

Souhegan Coop High School is a public grades 9–12 school in Amherst, NH, serving about 696 students through the Souhegan Cooperative School District in a relatively small, suburban community. It is one of New Hampshire’s strongest traditional public high schools, ranking 6th out of 89 statewide for 2025–2026 and earning a five-star rating. Its student-teacher ratio is a favorable 10.3 to 1, lower than most nearby comprehensive high schools.

The school’s biggest academic strengths are reading and science. In 2025–2026, 81% of students reached proficiency in reading and 73% in science, compared with 55% and 38% statewide. Science performance improved especially sharply, rising from 45% in 2023–2024 to 73% most recently. Souhegan’s 46% math proficiency rate was also above the state average of 44%, but mathematics is less distinctive than reading and science. For comparison, Bedford High School and Hollis-Brookline High School posted stronger math results, while Souhegan’s science result was considerably higher than Hollis-Brookline’s 50%. The specialized Academy for Science and Design Charter (H) led the area in all three subjects but is much smaller and not a direct comparison.

Souhegan also reports strong student-success outcomes: a 94.1% graduation rate in 2024–2025 and a very low 0.5% dropout rate. These results compare favorably with the larger Nashua High School South and Nashua High School North, where graduation rates were about 83% and dropout rates were around 3%. Parents should note two areas to watch: Souhegan’s graduation rate has gradually declined from nearly 98% in 2021–2022, and its special education subgroup ranking has weakened even though it remains above the statewide midpoint. Overall, Souhegan offers an unusually strong combination of academic achievement, graduation, persistence, and relatively small-school staffing.
