Indian River School

Indian River School is a public middle school in Canaan, New Hampshire, serving 292 students in grades 5–8 as part of the Mascoma Valley Regional School District.

The school’s academic results are mixed, but recent progress is encouraging. In 2025–26, 39% of students were proficient in math, 47% in reading, and 43% in science. Science is the clearest strength: Indian River exceeded the state average by five percentage points and improved from 27% proficiency the prior year. Math also rose nine points, while reading remained fairly steady. The school ranks 90th out of 138 New Hampshire middle schools, placing it in the 35th percentile. The most important academic concern is a dip in grades 6 and 7, especially in reading. Sixth-grade students posted 28% proficiency in math and 34% in reading, while seventh-grade reading was 41%. By eighth grade, results improved substantially: math reached 47% and reading 53%, slightly above state averages. This pattern suggests that helping students through the middle grades should be a priority. Nearby Lebanon Middle School and Newfound are useful benchmarks because they are stronger but relatively comparable, while Sunapee Middle High School and Frances C. Richmond School perform at a much higher level. Indian River’s special education effectiveness is a notable bright spot, ranking in the 63rd percentile.
