Summary

Hillside Middle School is a large public school in Manchester, New Hampshire, serving about 1,071 students in grades 5–8 as part of the Manchester School District. Its size is a notable feature: Hillside enrolls more students than nearby Manchester middle schools, including Henry J. McLaughlin Junior Middle School, Middle School At Parkside, and Southside Middle School. The school serves an economically diverse urban community, with about 48% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academic results are the most important concern. For 2025–2026, Hillside ranked 135th out of 138 New Hampshire middle schools, placing it near the bottom statewide. Proficiency was 14% in math, 28% in reading, and 15% in science, compared with statewide rates of 44%, 55%, and 38%. Hillside’s results are broadly similar to other Manchester schools, but generally a little weaker: Southside posted 19% math, 32% reading, and 18% science, while McLaughlin recorded 16%, 27%, and 18%. Hillside performed slightly better than Parkside in math and reading. Among nearby higher-performing schools, the differences are much larger: Mountain View Middle School reported 47% math, 62% reading, and 40% science proficiency, while Ross A. Lurgio Middle School reported 73%, 79%, and 68%.

Math is Hillside’s clearest schoolwide priority, especially in fifth and eighth grades. Reading is relatively stronger, with 33% proficiency in both fifth and seventh grade, but sixth-grade reading is a significant weakness at 17%. Science performance is low but close to the other Manchester schools. Results have remained persistently low rather than showing sustained improvement. Hillside’s student-teacher ratio of 11.7 is higher than those of its three Manchester peers, particularly Parkside’s 9.5, which may make individualized support more difficult. Parents may want to ask about math intervention, sixth-grade reading support, science instruction, attendance and engagement systems, and how the school coordinates services across its large enrollment.
