Science is another comparatively stronger area: although still below the state, Milton’s 25% proficiency rate exceeds the average among nearby comparison schools with available results.

There are signs of progress, especially in reading, which increased from 28% proficiency in 2022–2023 to 39% in 2025–2026. However, the school still trails most nearby schools in math and reading. For example, New Durham Elementary School reports 60% math and 57% reading proficiency, while Middleton Elementary School has recently made substantial ranking gains and reports 49% math and 48% reading proficiency. The most important areas for improvement appear to be early-grade literacy and math, consistent intervention across grades, and support for students receiving special education services, whose 2024–2025 effectiveness ranking was last statewide.
