Summary

Edgewood Elementary is a grades 3–5 school in Whiteville, NC, that serves about 450 students as part of the Whiteville City Schools district. The school currently ranks at the 49th percentile statewide (759 of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools), placing it essentially in the middle of the pack. With roughly 99.3% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Edgewood serves one of the highest-poverty student populations in the region. Because Whiteville Primary serves grades PK–2, Edgewood is the district's only tested elementary school, meaning its results effectively represent the district's entire elementary-level performance.

Despite those challenges, Edgewood has some genuine bright spots. Third-grade math has run above the state average for four consecutive years — 77.8% proficient in 2025–2026 versus 66.4% statewide — and beats nearby Chadbourn Elementary, Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary, and Tabor City School. Fifth-grade science is also a standout at 74.3% proficiency, the best among nearby comparison schools. English Learner students have ranked in the 72nd–78th percentile statewide for three straight years, and Hispanic and multi-racial students have shown strong recent gains. Chronic absenteeism, at 20.9%, is well below the district rate of 27.9% and most surrounding schools — a meaningful achievement given how much poverty the school serves.

The most concerning pattern is a sharp drop-off after 3rd grade. While 3rd-grade reading and math exceed state averages, 4th-grade math proficiency falls to 45.0% versus 61.4% statewide, and 4th-grade reading sits at 48.8% versus 57.7%. Fifth-grade reading also trails at 43.8%. Special education students have ranked near the 21st percentile statewide in recent years, and gifted-identified students saw their ranking swing from the 89th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 24th percentile in 2025–2026. A look at Old Dock Elementary, just 13 miles away with similarly extreme poverty, shows notably higher 3rd- and 4th-grade proficiency rates. Edgewood is outperforming many of its immediate neighbors, but the upper grades and certain subgroups have real room for growth.

This is an excellent school EDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY ..... I moved form Cary, NC. I was thinking about about putting my third grader in the Charter School, but before I did I stopped by and visited Edgewood Elementary school. This was a top 10 school in a little rural county. Computer Labs, art teacher, music teacher, P.E. Science Lab teacher, with their own greenhouse , Speech teacher, low student to teacher ratio, smart boards in classroom, nice media center with excellent resources with a full time media teacher that teaches media skills, and a wonderful staff, free tutoring program, along with afternoon clubs etc.... I could keeping listing things. I was very thankful that I stopped by before I enrolled my child in a school that offers all direct instruction programs. You need to visit the schools before you enrolled , don't be fooled about what people are saying, do like I did check it out for yourself. Close Quote
