Northside Elementary is a pre-K through grade 5 school in Norlina, North Carolina, serving 277 students in Warren County Schools, a district ranked in the bottom 18% of the state. In the latest statewide comparison (2025–2026), Northside climbed from the 5th to the 23rd percentile, improving its rank from roughly 1,414th to 1,152nd out of about 1,490 elementary schools. That gives the school one star and places it below the state median — but the improvement is its sharpest in years.

The brightest academic spot is fourth-grade reading: 61.4% proficiency versus 57.7% statewide, the top result among comparable nearby schools. Fourth-grade math (56.8%) is also above the Warren County Schools average. Across all EOG subjects and grades, average proficiency jumped from about 31% to 45%, still far from the state's 61% but a strong single-year gain. Subgroup data show particular momentum for African American students, who moved from the 11th to the 46th percentile compared with the same group statewide, and for male students, who moved from the 9th to the 36th percentile. Female students remain in the 9th percentile, signaling an internal equity gap worth attention.

The most urgent challenge is attendance. Chronic absenteeism reached 47.4%, meaning nearly half of Northside students missed enough school to be considered chronically absent. That is double the statewide rate, and higher than every nearby school — including New Hope Elementary at 26.4% and E O Young Junior Elementary at 32.7%. Fifth-grade science is also a weak point: 31.4% proficiency versus 67.7% statewide. And although Northside's overall results still trail several higher-ranked schools in the area, the fact that nearby schools like Vaughan Elementary serve similarly high-poverty families and post stronger results shows poverty is not the whole story. Sustaining the recent turnaround will likely depend on reducing absenteeism and extending fourth-grade success into fifth grade.
