Summary

Knightdale High is a large traditional public high school in the Raleigh suburb of Knightdale, NC, serving roughly 1,695 students in grades 9–12 as part of Wake County Schools, one of North Carolina's strongest districts. Despite that advantage, Knightdale is a clear underperformer: it ranks 531st of 662 high schools statewide (20th percentile, one star) and has sat in the bottom quarter of the state for years. In the local comparison, nearby Millbrook High (55th percentile) and Enloe High (74th percentile) rank far higher, while East Wake High (15th), Rolesville High (20th), and Southeast Raleigh High (24th) sit in the same lower-performing cluster.

The most striking concern is chronic absenteeism. Knightdale's rate reached 44.7% in the latest school year—more than double the Wake County average of 20.5% and far above the state's 24.2%—after climbing steadily from 35.2% over two years. Graduation rates are sliding too, dropping from 92.2% to 85.4%, which now trails both the district (91.3%) and state (88.8%). End-of-course exams lag district and state averages in every subject. Math I is the weakest point, with only 27.9% of students proficient in this foundational gateway course compared to 42.1% statewide, while Biology (40.9%) and Math III (50.4%) run roughly 18 points behind the state.

There are genuine bright spots. Biology proficiency more than doubled in two years (16.3% to 40.9%), Math III nearly doubled (27.6% to 50.4%), and Knightdale now edges out nearby East Wake on every EOC subject. The school also serves several historically underserved groups comparatively well: English Learner students rank in the 56th percentile statewide, Special Education students in the 47th, and African American students in the 46th. Still, attendance and early math remain the biggest obstacles. With nearly half of students chronically absent, sustaining these gains is the core challenge. For parents, Knightdale is a school with real improvement momentum, but attendance and ninth-grade math readiness will determine whether that progress holds.

My heart breaks for the KHS students because the levels of education they are receiving fall even below what some inmates in prison are receiving. Shame on the politicians and educators who are allowing this to happen. North Carolina should be better than this. Where has our pride gone? KHS is just one of the many schools that are in this category in NC. The lottery is a joke. Mostly it is not for education, but for a certain group of people who care nothing about anything except their own selves. And why should police be called to KHS 5 times in one day?

Citizens of NC, wake up. Save our children. I believe the children (all children) are entitled to an education. My grandchildren and great-grandchildren deserve more. Close Quote
