Summary

East Wake High is a large traditional public high school in Wendell, NC, serving about 1,777 students in grades 9–12 within the 4-star-rated Wake County Schools district. The school currently ranks 562nd out of 662 high schools statewide, a 1-star rating and a steep drop from the 41st percentile just two years earlier. Roughly 63% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, but that alone doesn't explain the gap: nearby Knightdale High serves a nearly identical share of low-income students (66.9%) yet outperforms East Wake in every subject, including Math I (27.9% vs. 21.1%) and English II (54.7% vs. 50.3%).

Academically, East Wake trails the district and state in every End-of-Course test. Only 21.1% of students are proficient in Math I, compared with 36.6% in Wake County and 42.1% statewide, and Math III proficiency fell sharply from 63.8% last year to 46.4%. Biology sits at 39.3% proficiency versus a 69.1% district average, while English II, the school's strongest tested subject, still leaves half of students below grade level. The school does have bright spots: the 88.4% graduation rate nearly matches the 88.8% state average, improving from 84.3% the prior year. Chronic absenteeism, however, affects 37.2% of students — nearly double the Wake County rate of 20.5% — and has hovered near that level for several years, making attendance a likely barrier to stronger achievement.

Most troubling is the recent decline across virtually every student population — by ethnicity, income, gender, and special education status — from roughly the middle of the state rankings to the bottom quartile. The exception is English Language Learner students, who rank at the 59th percentile and represent a genuine instructional strength. Nearby Corinth Holders High, just over seven miles away, shows what is possible in the same region, with a 93.4% graduation rate and about 70% proficiency in biology and English II. Because Wake County Schools remains a high-performing district, East Wake's challenges look less like a lack of resources and more like a need for focused school-level strategy around attendance, math support, and academic intervention.
