Summary

Oak Grove Elementary is a pre-K through 5th-grade school in the 27606 area of Raleigh, NC, serving 553 students as part of the Wake County Schools district. The school currently ranks 380 out of 1,492 elementary schools statewide, placing it in the 75th percentile with a 4-star rating — a solid showing, though a step down from its mid-2010s peak, when Oak Grove regularly ranked in the 83rd–87th percentile. Within a roughly 4-mile radius, Oak Grove sits in the middle of a competitive field: it outperforms Penny Road Elementary, Swift Creek Elementary, Yates Mill Elementary, and Briarcliff Elementary, but trails higher-ranked neighbors such as Laurel Park Elementary, Farmington Woods Elementary, Apex Elementary, Middle Creek Elementary, and West Lake Elementary.

One differentiator for Oak Grove is attendance. Its chronic absenteeism rate is 20.5%, which matches the Wake County average, but every nearby elementary school has a lower rate — even Yates Mill Elementary, which serves a far higher-poverty population, reports just 15.0%. On the resource side, Oak Grove spends $10,384 per student, the highest of any nearby school, and maintains a favorable 13.1:1 student-teacher ratio, lower than most of its neighbors. In other words, the school has strong funding and staffing, yet its outcomes are not outpacing peers, and attendance appears to be one of the most actionable areas for improvement.

Academically, 5th grade is Oak Grove's strongest year, with proficiency rates in math, reading, and science that meet or beat district averages. The school has also made a notable leap with English Language Learners, moving from the 8th percentile statewide in 2021-2022 to the 46th percentile today. The most significant challenge, though, is an equity gap: White students score in the 87th percentile statewide, while economically disadvantaged students score in the bottom 10th percentile relative to their peers. Nearby schools with similar poverty rates, such as West Lake and Farmington Woods, do not show the same dramatic divide. Bottom line: Oak Grove is a dependable, well-funded school with genuine strengths in upper elementary, but families should weigh uneven outcomes across student groups and watch attendance trends.

Open Quote We have been @ this school for several years & have seen a steady decline in both student & teacher satisfaction. Evidence of this is the large amount of turnover year to year. The Principal isn't a people person at all. If you are looking for warm & fuzzy - this is not the place for you. The PTA tries very hard to help the school as much as possible but is met with the attitudes of "That would be great, but this would be better". Considering the PTA raises money & tries to help by VOLUNTEERING, it never is enough to make the administration happy. The teachers are great & really do try to help the children. The specials teachers are great, with the exception of the PE teacher. How they can let someone like that be a PE teacher & influence how children maintain a healthy way of life is beyond me. For the evaluation at the end of the semester she shows the children cards & has them describe their actions (jump, hop, skip). Why not let the children actually be ACTIVE!?!?! Overall I have been very dissatisfied with the school & really hope that the next batch of children who attend get a new administrator who actually makes school fun for the children. This is actually possible! Close Quote
