Summary

Cuthbertson Middle, a grades 6–8 school in Waxhaw, NC, serving 1,323 students in Union County Public Schools, is one of North Carolina's most consistently high-performing middle schools: it ranks 19th out of 778 middle schools statewide for 2025–2026 (98th percentile, 5 stars) and has held a top-5% ranking for a decade. While no other middle schools within 20 miles were available for direct comparison, Cuthbertson dramatically outperforms both the district and statewide averages on every subject and grade level tested.

In 2025–2026, proficiency rates are roughly 90% or above in math (90.4%–91.1% across 6th, 7th, and 8th grades) and reach 94.5% in 8th grade science. Reading is also strong, ranging from 84.5% to 86.2%, but math and science stand out as the school's most striking strengths. These results beat North Carolina by roughly 26 to 38 percentage points per test. What truly sets Cuthbertson apart, however, is its effectiveness across student subgroups: English Language Learners rank 3rd in the state, Hispanic students 6th, Special Education students 9th, and low-income students 17th. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 27.2% in 2021–2022 to 11.0%, about half the state's 24.2%.

Cuthbertson also operates efficiently: with a student-teacher ratio near 22.4:1 and reported per-pupil spending around $6,904, it produces elite results without unusually small classes or extraordinary funding. Roughly 10–11% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the school's strong outcomes for those students are notable. The only area worth monitoring is Gifted & Talented, which ranks 57th statewide (88th percentile) — still excellent, but the lowest of the school's subgroup rankings. Overall, Cuthbertson Middle is a standout even within its well-regarded district, offering families in Waxhaw an exceptionally consistent, high-achieving school.

Open Quote There is absolutely no communication among the staff. If your child struggles in any way this is not the school for them. My son gets pulled from a class for extra help only to get a zero in the class he was pulled from. Your child will get lost in this school if they struggle in any way. My wife has had to go up to school several times because of her emails not being answered. Close Quote
