Summary

Liberty Drive Elementary is a small upper-elementary school in Thomasville City Schools, serving 306 students in grades 4 and 5 in Thomasville, NC. The school has historically ranked near the bottom of North Carolina elementary schools, earning a 6th percentile ranking for 2025–2026, consistent with a decade of low performance. Nearly all students (99%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and chronic absenteeism sits at 30.1%. Academic proficiency is well below state averages: only 28.7% of 5th graders are proficient in reading and 43.0% in math, compared with state rates of 55.3% and 62.9%.

What makes Liberty Drive's results especially notable is the comparison with nearby schools serving virtually identical high-poverty populations. Hasty Elementary and Hopewell Elementary School each have roughly 99% poverty rates, yet outperform Liberty Drive by 30 to 45 percentage points in math, reading, and science. Chronic absenteeism is another differentiator: Liberty Drive's rate of 30.1% is far higher than Pilot Elementary (8.2%), Hasty (11.0%), and Brier Creek Elementary (13.9%). Liberty Drive also carries a larger student-teacher ratio (16.5) than most of these higher-performing schools, making individualized intervention more difficult despite per-pupil spending ($11,739) that exceeds several stronger-performing neighbors.

There are encouraging signs. Reading proficiency in 4th grade improved from 29.3% to 37.1% in one year, and English Learner students have climbed to the 44th percentile in subgroup rankings, a significant multiyear gain. Special Education students also jumped from the 2nd to the 37th percentile. However, the drop in 5th-grade reading (from 39.8% to 28.7%) suggests the school has not yet built a consistent approach across both grade levels. Since attendance and reading are the clearest levers for improvement, families should watch whether the school prioritizes these areas. Thomasville Primary, the feeder school next door, shares similar challenges, so the entire elementary span in Thomasville will need coordinated effort to change these outcomes.
