Summary

Albemarle High is a traditional public high school in Albemarle, NC, serving about 414 students in grades 9–12 within Stanly County Schools. For the most recent reporting year, the school earned a one-star rating and ranked 545th out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it at the 18th percentile. By comparison, its district neighbors West Stanly High (55th percentile), North Stanly High (42nd percentile), and South Stanly High (36th percentile) all rank much higher, even though nearly all students at every one of these schools — 98 to 99 percent — qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Classroom results show a similar pattern. At Albemarle High, only 17.6% of students passed the Biology end-of-course test and 24.1% passed Math I, compared with roughly 58% and 47% districtwide. English II proficiency (34.5%) also trails the district by a wide margin, although Math III proficiency (71.4%) came in above the state average — a genuine bright spot. About 72.9% of Albemarle students graduate on time, far below the district rate of 88.4%, and chronic absenteeism stands at 35.5%, nearly twice the district average. These numbers point to real challenges around attendance and early high school coursework.

Interestingly, poverty and funding don't tell the whole story. Other Stanly County high schools serve similarly high levels of economic need yet produce stronger academic and graduation results. Meanwhile, Albemarle High has shown progress, climbing from the 7th percentile in 2021–2022, and English Learner and Special Education students made meaningful gains in the most recent year. The school even shares a campus with Stanly STEM Early College, a top-rated high school, which shows that student success is possible in the same building, though the early college serves a different, self-selected student population.
