Summary

Union High is a comprehensive public high school in Rose Hill, North Carolina, serving 494 students in grades 9–12 as part of Sampson County Schools. The school serves a highly economically disadvantaged population, with more than 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch — a rate consistent with all nearby high schools. Academically, Union has struggled in recent years: its 2025–2026 state ranking of 542nd out of 662 North Carolina high schools places it in the 18th percentile, a significant decline from the 49th percentile it held a decade ago.

Compared with nearby traditional high schools, Union sits in the middle of the pack. It outperforms its counterparts in Duplin County SchoolsJames Kenan High and Wallace-Rose Hill High — on nearly every End-of-Course exam, and its overall performance is similar to Clinton High. However, Lakewood High, also in Sampson County, is meaningfully stronger in English II (by 11.5 points), Math I (by 16.2 points), and Math III (by 11.2 points). As with most traditional high schools, Union also trails the region's early college models: Sampson Early College High and Duplin Early College High both post substantially higher proficiency rates.

There are meaningful signs of progress as well. Union's graduation rate has climbed from 74.3% in 2021–2022 to 88.5% in 2025–2026 — now the highest among nearby traditional high schools and essentially even with the state average of 88.8%. Chronic absenteeism has also fallen dramatically, from 62.3% in 2020–2021 to 26.8% in 2024–2025. The school's English Learner students are a particular bright spot, ranking in the 67th percentile statewide, well above the school's overall standing. Even so, proficiency on state exams remains well below state averages in every subject, and even the school's identified gifted students rank in just the 17th percentile — a reminder that significant academic challenges remain.
