West Rowan High

West Rowan High is a large, rural public high school in Mount Ulla, NC, serving approximately 988 students in grades 9–12 as part of North Carolina’s Rowan-Salisbury Schools. The school’s greatest strength is its graduation rate, which has consistently exceeded state and district averages — 92.5% in 2025–2026 compared with 88.8% statewide and 86.6% for the district — even while serving a student population marked by near-universal economic disadvantage, with 99.7% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. West Rowan’s overall academic standing, however, places it in the bottom 18% of North Carolina high schools; although the school improved in the most recent year, it remains well below the position it held a decade ago.

Test results tell a more challenging story. Students score below state averages on all four End-of-Course exams: Biology proficiency was 46.4% (state average 58.5%), English II was 51.5% (state average 64.6%), Math I was 25.1% (state average 42.1%), and Math III was 40.2% (state average 68.9%). The most revealing comparison for parents is Carson High, a school in the same district with a nearly identical poverty rate but much stronger results — 91.5% proficiency in Biology, 63.7% in Math I, and 65.5% in Math III — placing Carson in the 55th percentile statewide. That gap suggests concentrated poverty alone does not explain West Rowan’s test scores and that school-level factors such as programming, leadership, and attendance make a significant difference.

Chronic absenteeism has also been a serious barrier, with 35.4% of students chronically absent in 2024–2025. That is a meaningful improvement from the previous year’s 50.2% but remains about 11 percentage points above the state average. Encouragingly, the 2025–2026 school year brought sharp test-score gains in nearly every subject — with Biology proficiency nearly tripling — and outcomes for African American students rose sharply as well. Even with that progress, math proficiency remains a particular concern, and English language learners and students receiving special education services continue to rank near the bottom of the statewide distribution. Parents considering this school should weigh its strong graduation record against its still-low academic proficiency and persistent attendance challenges.
