Summary

John W Dillard Academy is a small elementary school in Madison, NC, serving roughly 256 students in grades PK–5 as part of Rockingham County Schools, a district rated in the bottom third of North Carolina. The school earned 1 star in 2025–26, ranking in the 16th percentile statewide — below every nearby comparison school, including Huntsville Elementary (25th percentile), Wentworth Elementary (52nd), and Douglass Elementary (50th). Nearly 99% of Dillard students qualify for free or reduced lunch, making it one of the highest-poverty elementary schools in the region.

Math and reading proficiency are the biggest concerns. Combined 3rd–5th grade math proficiency was about 42.6% in 2025–26, and reading was about 40.0% — both well below state averages. In 4th grade, only 31.9% of students were proficient in math (52.6% district, 61.4% state), and reading proficiency was 36.2% (48.0% district, 57.7% state). Nearby same-district schools that serve similarly high-poverty populations produce far stronger results: Bethany Elementary posts 66.4% math and 59.6% reading proficiency, while Stoneville Elementary posts 60.1% math and 51.2% reading. Science is a genuine bright spot, though: Dillard 5th graders outscored the district four years in a row and topped the state average three of the last four years, reaching 68.9% proficiency in 2024–25.

Attendance is another strength: Dillard's chronic absenteeism rate was 22.9% in 2024–25, well below the district's 36.5% and even below the state's 24.2%. The school's special education students ranked in the 86th percentile statewide in 2023–24 — a 4-star result that suggests strong support for those learners. Yet the bigger story is a decade-long decline: Dillard went from a 4-star, top-quartile school in 2017–18 to a 1-star rating every year since 2022–23. Because nearby high-poverty schools are achieving better outcomes, student poverty alone cannot explain this slide. The school has real assets to work with in science, attendance, and special education, but raising math and reading achievement in the upper elementary grades is clearly the most urgent task.
