Summary

Mineral Springs Elementary serves approximately 441 students in grades PK–5 in Ellerbe, NC, as part of Richmond County Schools. The school has slipped from solid 3-star ratings in recent years to a 1-star rating in 2025–2026 (25th percentile statewide), placing it in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools despite its respectable track record from 2017 through 2023. Within Richmond County, however, it still outperforms four of its six same-district peers — only L J Bell Elementary and Fairview Heights Elementary rank higher, while Washington Street Elementary, Monroe Avenue Elementary, East Rockingham Elementary, and West Rockingham Elementary trail behind.

Math is Mineral Springs' clearest strength. In 2025–2026, the school exceeded district averages in math at every grade level, and 4th-grade math proficiency reached 70.8% — more than nine points above the state average, a result the school has sustained for four consecutive years. Attendance is another positive. Chronic absenteeism fell from 32.9% in 2021–2022 to 21.2% in 2024–2025, which is better than both the district average (28.0%) and the state average (24.2%), and notably stronger than several nearby schools in the same district.

Reading is the school's biggest concern, with 3rd-grade proficiency at just 34.3% versus 55.6% statewide, and 5th-grade science also trails district and state levels. Class sizes are growing: the student-teacher ratio rose from 14.6 to 18.3, the highest among nearby elementary schools. Gifted/Talented students now rank at the 8th percentile after years of above-average performance, and English Learner results dropped sharply in a single year. Crucially, similarly high-poverty schools nearby — West End Elementary and West Pine Elementary in Moore County Schools — achieve far stronger outcomes with the same level of economic need. That gap suggests district support, instructional resources, and staffing, not poverty alone, will determine whether Mineral Springs can reverse its recent slide.
