Ramseur Elementary School is a small PK–5 public elementary school in Ramseur, North Carolina, serving roughly 346 students in the Randolph County School System. Nearly the entire student body — 99.1% — qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has declined steadily over the past seven years, falling from a 3-star, mid-range ranking in 2018–2019 to a 1-star rating at the 12th percentile statewide today. That makes it one of the lowest-performing elementary schools in the area, well below nearby Liberty Elementary School (20th percentile), Coleridge Elementary School (36th), Grays Chapel Elementary School (44th), and Franklinville Elementary School (53rd).

Academically, Ramseur trails its district and the state in every tested subject and grade. Only 32.8% of 3rd graders read proficiently, compared with 49.4% districtwide and 55.6% statewide, while 3rd-grade math proficiency was 51.7% versus 66.4% statewide. Gaps of roughly 10 to 20 percentage points persist through 4th and 5th grades, with 5th-grade science showing the largest shortfall, at 44.7% proficient versus 67.7% statewide. Chronic absenteeism has improved from 35.1% two years ago to 25.8%, but it still exceeds the district rate of 22.5% and the statewide rate of 24.2% — and is far higher than at several stronger nearby schools.

The striking contrast with Franklinville Elementary School, just 2.3 miles away, shows that poverty alone does not determine outcomes. Franklinville serves an almost identical student population — 98.9% economically disadvantaged — yet ranks in the 53rd percentile statewide, with far stronger results: 64.1% of its 3rd graders read proficiently versus Ramseur's 32.8%, and its 5th-grade science proficiency is 67.9% versus 44.7%. Notably, Ramseur spends more per student ($11,800) than Franklinville ($10,355) or Grays Chapel ($9,144). There are recent signs of progress — 4th-grade math jumped from 31.0% to 50.0% and 3rd-grade reading from 19.0% to 32.8%. Sustaining those gains and improving attendance will be key to reversing the school's downward trend.
