Coleridge Elementary School is a small K–5 school in Ramseur, NC, serving about 273 students within the Randolph County School System. Coleridge, like nearly every school in the area, serves a very high-poverty population — roughly 98.9% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — yet outcomes differ significantly between Coleridge and its neighbors. The school is showing signs of recovery this year, ranking in the 36th percentile statewide after hitting an 11th-percentile low in 2023–24, but it remains below where it was five years ago.

Some genuine bright spots stand out. Coleridge's 5th-grade science scores are strong: 70% proficient, beating the state (67.7%), the district (65.0%), and every other local district school including Seagrove Elementary School (47.6%) and Franklinville Elementary School (67.9%). Third-grade math also tops the district (67.6% vs. 62.1%). The bigger concern is a noticeable "grade cliff" after 3rd grade. Attendance is the most urgent issue: chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled since 2021–22 to 26.1%, above the state (24.2%) and well above Seagrove (16.1%) and Franklinville (17.5%). Girls at Coleridge are improving much faster than boys, with female students ranking at the 47th percentile statewide versus the 26th percentile for boys. Since nearby Seagrove and Franklinville achieve better reading and math results with similar poverty levels, Coleridge's challenges are not tied to income. Reducing absences and translating early-grade success into 4th- and 5th-grade gains would be the most productive next steps.
