Summary:

Liberty, North Carolina is served by three public schools — two elementary schools and one middle school — enrolling about 1,150 students, with nearly every student at each school qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, a very high-poverty community that straddles the boundary between the Randolph County School System and Guilford County Schools.

Among the three schools, Nathanael Greene Elementary is the strongest academic performer, ranking in the 49th percentile statewide (2 stars) and reaching or exceeding state averages in multiple categories — including 86.4% proficiency in 3rd grade math versus 66.4% statewide and 68.2% in 3rd grade reading versus 55.6% statewide. Its scores, however, are volatile between years, and its 27.1% chronic absenteeism rate is the highest in the city. Northeastern Randolph Middle School, the only middle school, ranks in the 37th percentile but beats its own district in every reported math and science category; reading is its weakness, with every score below the state average, and its percentile has slipped from 56th to 37th over three years. Liberty Elementary School is the clearest concern, ranking in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools for three straight years; in 2025-2026, no grade-level test reached the state average, and just 25.8% of 3rd graders read proficiently versus 55.6% statewide.

Two findings matter most for parents. First, reading is the citywide weakness: math proficiency exceeds reading at every school, and the gap is largest at Liberty Elementary School, where the two-year average reading proficiency is just 37.8%. Second, poverty alone does not explain the differences — all three schools have near-universal free lunch eligibility, yet Nathanael Greene Elementary reaches above-state performance in several areas while Liberty Elementary School lags far behind, suggesting school-level practices matter. Families should also note that Liberty Elementary School and Northeastern Randolph Middle School belong to the Randolph County School System, while Nathanael Greene Elementary is part of Guilford County Schools, so district policies differ even within this one small town.
