Located in Jacksonville, NC, not far from the Marine Corps bases that shape the area, Hunters Creek Middle serves 856 students in grades 6–8 as part of Onslow County Schools. About 57% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher rate than most higher-performing middle schools in the district. The school currently earns a 2-star rating and ranks at the 37th percentile of North Carolina middle schools—sixth among the eight same-district middle schools in its local comparison group.

The biggest academic obstacle is math. In 2025–26, only 41% of 7th graders and 42% of 8th graders were proficient, roughly 11–15 points below state averages. Reading is much closer to par, within about 7 points of the state in every grade, and 8th-grade science meets the state average. Nearby New Bridge Middle posts far higher scores—72% proficiency in 8th-grade math and 70% in reading.
