Open Quote My child entered in Kindergarten under their Mandarin immersion program last year. Upon enrolling, I was not aware that 90 of the curriculum is provided in the target language. The home room teachers speaks in Mandarin entirely and Math is also taught in Mandarin only. English/Reading instruction is only given for 30mins each day. Most of the families including myself had to seek outside tutoring so the students can read at normal reading level. Also, in my opinion, I’m not sure if the teachers are apart of a cultural teaching exchange program, however in my opinion, I think the teachers specifically in the Chinese program lacked empathy and cultural competence when interacting with the students. Especially for those who may have special needs. Families have mentioned that the teachers complained about normal behaviors of active 5-6 year olds. This was really a struggle for parents as we did not understand why we received constant complaints on situations where simple redirection could have been implemented. A teacher said my child is “different” in a negative undertone. Also, if your child is having difficulty grasping the language in a timely manner they see fit, they will constantly try to persuade you to dis enroll your child. Otherwise, the school is clean, safe and the support staff is amazing. The school did not allow a language switch and due to the Mandarin teachers’ insensitive and distant temperament, my child will not be returning. Close Quote
