Summary

Francis Bradley Middle is a large, traditional public middle school in Huntersville, NC, serving approximately 1,089 students in grades 6–8 as part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The school holds a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger, ranking 289th out of 778 North Carolina middle schools and placing it at the 63rd percentile statewide — solidly mid-to-upper tier, though not on par with nearby Bailey Middle, which ranks in the top 7% of the state. What distinguishes Bradley from many CMS neighbors is its economic and attendance profile: the free/reduced lunch rate is about 46.8%, far lower than most nearby middle schools, and chronic absenteeism (24.1%) is below the district average of 26.8%.

In most subjects, Bradley outperforms both CMS and state averages. Reading is a particular strength, with all three grade levels at or above state proficiency, and 8th grade science has been a consistent bright spot for several years. The biggest academic red flag is 8th grade math, where only 47.4% of students are proficient — roughly 6–7 points below district and state averages, and a sharp single-year drop from the prior year's 59.6%. The school's profile is especially interesting when compared with Coulwood STEM Academy: the two schools have similar overall state rankings, yet Bradley is stronger in reading while Coulwood excels in math and science.

Bradley serves its White, multi-racial, and gifted students very effectively, with those subgroups ranking near the 80th percentile statewide. However, the school shows meaningful equity gaps: Hispanic, English learner, and low-income students rank in the 38th–46th percentile range, and the African American subgroup percentile dropped from the low-80s to 62nd in the latest school year. Bradley has also trended downward over the past decade, declining from a 4-star school ranked 106th statewide in 2015–2016 to its current 3-star status. While it remains ahead of struggling nearby schools like Ridge Road Middle and Whitewater Middle, there is clear room to regain its former standing.

Open Quote Bradley is an underrated school. They managed to meet the needs of a very diverse student mix. My kids are challenged and supported. The teachers and staff care about the kids, and make the most of what they have. Parent involvement is getting better every year to help support the team. Lots of sports and activities to choose from. Close Quote
