Hornets Nest Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 30.1% to 41.8%, compared to 61.4% to 66.7% for the district and 58.9% to 64.1% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students. Compared to nearby schools, such as David Cox Road Elementary, Croft Community School, and Mountain Island Lake Academy, Hornets Nest Elementary performs significantly worse academically, despite the high spending per student ($9,876 in 2018-2019) and the district's overall rating. The relatively high student-teacher ratio at Hornets Nest Elementary, ranging from 17 to 18 students per teacher, may also be a contributing factor to the school's low performance, as smaller class sizes have been associated with improved student outcomes.

Open Quote I went to this school a couple years ago. Let me tell you, try to find any other school for your child to go to. I was in fifth grade, it seemed to me that the teachers passed everyone because they didn't want to deal with those kids anymore. But I wouldn't blame them. Horrible school. Okay teachers. Horrible students. The school was dirty and the bathroom was a place where many fights took place. I was glad I only had to go there for one year because I wouldn't be able to handle that school. Save your child from the bullying at this school and choose ANY OTHER SCHOOL than this one. Close Quote
