Hornets Nest Elementary

Summary:

Hornets Nest Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 569 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 129 out of 243 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hornets Nest Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state standardized tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2022-2023 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in mathematics ranged from 21.5% to 31.2%, compared to the state and district averages of around 55-61%. The school's performance is particularly low for African American, Hispanic, and low-income students, who rank in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina elementary schools. Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $9,876 and a student-teacher ratio of 18:1, the school's academic outcomes remain a significant concern.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as David Cox Road Elementary, Croft Community School, and Mountain Island Lake Academy, generally perform better on state tests and have higher rankings compared to Hornets Nest Elementary. This suggests that the challenges faced by Hornets Nest may be unique to the school and its specific context, rather than being a reflection of the broader district or regional performance. Exploring best practices from these higher-performing nearby schools, as well as implementing targeted interventions and support for the school's underperforming student subgroups, could be potential strategies to improve Hornets Nest Elementary's academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to this school a couple years ago. Let me tell you, try to find any other school for your child to go to. I was in fifth grade, it seemed to me that the teachers passed everyone because they didn't want to deal with those kids anymore. But I wouldn't blame them. Horrible school. Okay teachers. Horrible students. The school was dirty and the bathroom was a place where many fights took place. I was glad I only had to go there for one year because I wouldn't be able to handle that school. Save your child from the bullying at this school and choose ANY OTHER SCHOOL than this one. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
