Pinewood Elementary

Summary:

Pinewood Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 571 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 140 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating.

Pinewood Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentages of Hispanic and African American students compared to nearby schools like Selwyn Elementary and Dilworth Elementary Sedgefield Campus. However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state in standardized test scores, ranking in the bottom 15% of North Carolina elementary schools. Over 99% of Pinewood students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, much higher than the surrounding schools.

Despite its challenges, Pinewood Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, comparable to or slightly lower than nearby high-performing schools like Collinswood Language Academy and Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy. The school's underperformance and socioeconomic factors present an opportunity for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district to implement targeted interventions and support systems to address the specific needs of Pinewood's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school has a lot of confrontations between the students. I don't feel my child is safe in this school. Many of the students come from poor backgrounds. The teachers seem to focus on teaching for the EOG's instead of basic learning based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. The administration is almost impossible to get through to and aren't on the same page with the teachers, parents or stuents. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
