Summary

Starmount Academy of Excellence is a PK-5 elementary school in Charlotte, NC, serving 416 students as part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The school ranks at the 5th percentile statewide — 1,415 out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools — and serves an extremely high-poverty population, with 98.8% of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch. Chronic absenteeism is 27.9%, above the district rate of 26.8% and state rate of 24.2%, though it has dropped from a peak of 40.7% in 2020-21. The student-teacher ratio is 14.6, similar to other nearby elementary schools.

Academically, Starmount trails district and state averages across nearly every grade and subject. Reading is the most urgent concern: proficiency in 2025-26 stood at just 23.3% in 3rd grade, 28.8% in 4th, and 21.2% in 5th — more than 29 points behind the state average in every grade. Third-grade math is a bright spot at 65.1%, nearly matching the 66.4% statewide rate, but falls to roughly 37% by 4th and 5th grades. Science is also low at 34.8% versus 67.7% statewide. Poverty alone doesn't explain these results. Montclaire Elementary, less than a mile away, serves an almost identical poverty population (99.4%) yet ranks at the 28th percentile with higher scores in most grades. Pinewood Elementary and Huntingtowne Farms Elementary, also high-poverty neighbors, outrank Starmount in most subjects.

There are encouraging signs of momentum. The school's statewide rank has climbed from the 1st–2nd percentile to the 5th, and 3rd grade math proficiency jumped from 27.8% in 2023-24 to 65.1% today. Chronic absenteeism also improved from 40.7% four years ago to 27.9%, though it remains roughly three times higher than at nearby Beverly Woods Elementary, Collinswood Language Academy, and South Academy of International Languages. For parents, Starmount offers a solid student-teacher ratio and recent gains in early math, but reading, upper-grade achievement, and attendance remain the key challenges to watch.
