Summary

Scotts Creek School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Sylva, North Carolina, with 438 students. The school is part of the Jackson County Public Schools district, which is ranked 172 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Scotts Creek School consistently underperforms compared to the state and its own district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's proficiency rates in math range from 22.4% in 8th grade to 44.2% in 7th grade, while the state averages range from 48.7% to 64.1%. In reading, the school's proficiency rates range from 27.8% in 3rd grade to 63.3% in 5th grade, compared to state averages of 46.7% to 58.1%. The school also struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, with its rankings for female, male, Hispanic, and white students all in the bottom half of the state.

Despite the school's challenges, the data suggests that there may be pockets of success, such as the school's relatively strong performance in 5th grade science and 8th grade reading. Nearby schools, such as Fairview School and schools in the Haywood County Schools district, are able to achieve much higher proficiency rates in core academic subjects, even though they serve similar student populations. Addressing Scotts Creek School's issues will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach focused on improving instruction, supporting diverse learners, and leveraging the school's strengths to drive overall improvement.

Open Quote Scotts creek is a wonderful school. The teachers care and the principal makes sure that there is control and discipline. There are many rewards throughout the year for the students (incentives). They have a reading celebration at the end of school that includes a waterslide fashioned by the teachers. They have quarter reading celebrations to improve reading. They participate in AR reading. I have a 3 and 5 th grader. Close Quote
