Summary

Troutman Elementary is a large PK-5 school in Troutman, NC, serving roughly 902 students as part of Iredell-Statesville Schools. After years of solidly above-average performance — ranking in the 75th percentile with a 4-star rating in 2020-21 and staying in the 60s-70s for several years — the school has dropped to a 2-star rating and the 45th percentile statewide for 2025-26. That represents one of the steepest recent declines among area schools.

Reading is Troutman's biggest challenge: in every tested grade, fewer than half of students meet proficiency standards, with 4th graders running about 12 points below the state average. Math is a relative bright spot, particularly in 3rd grade, where proficiency exceeds both district and state averages. Science, once a strength, has also slipped below state levels. Locally, Troutman still outperforms low-rated nearby schools like N B Mills Elementary and Third Creek Elementary, but it trails stronger options such as Lakeshore Elementary and Sherrills Ford Elementary, both of which have far better reading results.

One genuinely positive trend is attendance: chronic absenteeism has dropped from 33% to about 21%, now below the state average. Yet Troutman serves a very high-poverty population according to reported meal eligibility, and its effectiveness with low-income students has fallen to the 13th percentile statewide. The student-teacher ratio has also climbed to 20.7, the highest among nearby elementary schools. Notably, Shepherd Elementary — with a nearly identical poverty profile — ranks higher and outperforms Troutman in reading and science, showing that improvement possible even in similar circumstances.
