Summary

Success Institute Charter is a very small K-8 charter school in Statesville, NC, enrolling roughly 90 students and serving a predominantly low-income community, with 95.6% of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch. In the most recent statewide ranking, Success Institute Charter placed 983rd out of 1,492 schools — the 34th percentile, earning 2 stars. That is mid-to-low statewide, but it marks a real improvement from the 26th percentile rankings of the past two years and a dramatic climb from the 1st or 2nd percentile rankings in 2012-2013 and 2016-2017. The school operates as its own single-school district, the Success Institute Charter School district.

The school's clearest strengths are reading and attendance. In 2025-2026, 3rd grade reading proficiency (54.5%) nearly matched the state average (55.6%), while 4th grade reading (66.7%) ran about 9 points above the state. Chronic absenteeism was just 11.0% — far below the 24.2% state average and lower than every nearby school in the comparison, including Celeste Henkel Elementary (12.7%) and American Renaissance School (29.0%). Despite its modest overall rank, Success Institute outperforms several close traditional public schools, such as N B Mills Elementary and Third Creek Elementary, and it ranks above American Renaissance even though Success Institute serves a much higher share of low-income students. State subgroup data also show strong results for low-income students, placing at the 54th percentile in 2023-2024.

Math is the school's biggest academic challenge. Proficiency stood at 40% in 3rd grade and 33.3% in 4th grade, compared to 66.4% and 61.4% statewide; by 7th grade, only 18.2% were proficient versus 56.2% statewide. The student-teacher ratio of 21.9:1 is also higher than at most nearby elementary schools within the Iredell-Statesville Schools district, where ratios typically fall between 11:1 and 15:1. Because grade-level cohorts are extremely small, test scores can swing sharply from year to year — for example, 5th grade reading dropped from 50% to 8.3% in a single year — so individual grade results should be interpreted cautiously. Still, the combination of low absenteeism, improving state rank, and solid early-grade reading makes Success Institute a noteworthy option within the Statesville area.
