Summary

East Iredell Elementary is a PK–5 school in Statesville, North Carolina, serving 663 students in the Iredell-Statesville Schools district. The school has struggled academically in recent years, sliding from a mid-pack ranking (47th percentile) in 2020–2021 to a 1-star rating in the 13th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools in the 2025–2026 ranking cycle. That continues a four-year stretch of bottom-quintile results. Nearly all students (99.55%) qualify for free/reduced lunch, so East Iredell serves an almost universally economically disadvantaged population.

Academically, proficiency rates trail the district by roughly 10 to 26 percentage points across reading, math, and science. The largest gaps are in math: only about 40% of 3rd graders are proficient compared with roughly two-thirds districtwide. One encouraging trend stands out: chronic absenteeism has fallen dramatically, from 38.0% in 2021–2022 to 14.7% in 2024–2025 — now well below the district (19.9%) and state (24.2%) averages. This suggests attendance efforts are working, though academic gains have not yet followed.

There are other bright spots. East Iredell's special education students now rank in the 58th percentile statewide with a 3-star rating, a sharp jump from earlier years — a sign that targeted supports may be paying off. Meanwhile, Cool Spring Elementary, only a few miles away and serving a nearly identical (99%) free/reduced lunch population, ranks in the 92nd percentile with math proficiency roughly double East Iredell's. That comparison shows high poverty doesn't have to mean low achievement, and it gives East Iredell a clear local reference point for what's possible. The school still has a long way to go, but improving attendance and strong special education results suggest momentum on which to build.
