Summary

Sumner Elementary is a public elementary school in Greensboro, North Carolina, serving 525 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 142 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sumner Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools over the past decade, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state standardized tests, is significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, Sumner Elementary's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 65.9%, compared to 62.4% for the Guilford County district and 64.1% for the state. The school's reading and science proficiency rates are also consistently lower than the district and state.

While Sumner Elementary's overall performance is low, the school's African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students perform relatively better, ranking in the top 30-40% of North Carolina schools for those subgroups. In contrast, the school's White, Disabled, and Gifted and Talented student subgroups perform in the bottom 10-20% of North Carolina schools. Sumner Elementary's extremely high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds, with over 99% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, is likely a significant contributing factor to the school's academic challenges. Nearby schools, such as Sedgefield Elementary and Vandalia Elementary, tend to have higher proficiency rates and better overall rankings compared to Sumner Elementary.

Open Quote This school is Excellent. The Principal, office Staff and Teachers all the way to whom ever you come in contact with at the school are very professional and have never made me or the children feel like I was less than human, with no respect even when they know nothing about me or our situation. The school is a jewel. I have raised four college grads one West Point educated a math teacher , special government and two are veterans and I wish my children could have attended this school. My grandkids attend this school and I will repeat I think it is an excellent school.. Close Quote
