Summary

Sedgefield Elementary is a PK-5 school in south Greensboro, NC, serving 489 students within Guilford County Schools, a district that ranks in the middle of North Carolina districts but where Sedgefield sits well below the district average. The school has ranked in the bottom quarter of state elementary schools for the past decade, currently placing at the 12th percentile with a 1-star rating. Nearly all of its students (99.4%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and academic proficiency consistently trails both the district and state — most starkly in early reading, where only one in three third-graders reads on grade level compared with more than half statewide.

Perhaps the most telling difference between Sedgefield and its neighbors is attendance. More than 37% of Sedgefield students are chronically absent, compared with 6.9% at Brooks Global Elementary and 10.5% at Millis Road Elementary — both high-poverty schools only a few miles away that rank far higher academically. Sedgefield also carries the highest student-teacher ratio (15.8) among nearby elementary schools, meaning larger class sizes than at Morehead Elementary (13.6) or Hunter Elementary (11.7). And while the school is not the lowest-ranked in its immediate cluster, the gap is striking: Edwin A Alderman Elementary, less than a mile away, ranks at the 57th percentile.

Sedgefield is not failing in every area, though. Its 4th-grade math scores have matched or nearly matched the district average for three consecutive years, special-education students have shown steady improvement, and the school's gifted subgroup ranked in the 96th percentile statewide in 2025-26. The deeper lesson for parents is that poverty does not determine outcomes. Brooks Global Elementary, Millis Road Elementary, and Edwin A Alderman Elementary serve nearly identical low-income populations yet achieve dramatically stronger results — showing that Sedgefield's most urgent challenges, especially chronic absenteeism and early-grade literacy, are problems that can be fixed with focus and effective practices.
