Summary

Greene County Intermediate is a small school in Snow Hill, North Carolina, serving 350 students in just 4th and 5th grades as part of Greene County Schools, a district ranked in the bottom 10% of North Carolina districts. The school sits in an unusual pathway where students typically arrive from West Greene Elementary (grades 2–3) before moving on to middle school.

Academically, the school is performing far below state averages. On the most recent end-of-grade exams, only 21.8% of 4th graders were proficient in math, compared with 61.4% statewide. Reading results are similarly concerning: 28.9% of 4th graders and 38.3% of 5th graders scored proficient, versus state rates of 57.7% and 55.3%. The school's statewide ranking has fallen steadily over several years, from the 23rd percentile in 2020–21 to the bottom 4% of North Carolina elementary schools today. Nearly every student subgroup — including low-income students, English language learners, and students in the gifted program — ranks in the lowest quarter of the state.

What makes these results especially notable is the comparison with nearby schools. Ayden Elementary, Ridgewood Elementary, and Creekside Elementary all serve communities with poverty rates similar to Greene County Intermediate's 99.1% free and reduced-price lunch rate, yet they rank in the upper half or top quarter of the state. Even Sam D Bundy Elementary posted much higher proficiency in math and reading. Attendance is not the issue — chronic absenteeism at 19.4% is actually below the state average. There are a few bright spots: 5th grade science and 5th grade reading have shown recent improvement. Still, the overall picture is one of a school that will need significant, sustained support to turn things around.
