Summary

Woodhill Elementary is a PK–5 school in Gastonia, NC, serving 577 students within Gaston County Schools. It is one of the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, ranking in the 2nd percentile in 2025-2026 with a 0-star rating, and it has stayed in the bottom 1st–7th percentile for over a decade. Nearly all students (99.5%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and proficiency levels trail both district and state averages in every subject and grade level tested.

Gaps grow especially wide by 5th grade, where only about one in five students is proficient in reading or math and one in three is proficient in science. The contrast with nearby schools serving similar populations makes the results stand out. Carr Elementary, just 2.3 miles away, serves the same share of low-income students yet ranks in the 45th percentile, with 5th grade math proficiency at 65.4% compared to Woodhill's 23.0%. Costner Elementary and Robinson Elementary have similarly high poverty rates and achieve meaningfully better results, showing that low income does not have to mean bottom-of-state outcomes.

Woodhill's most actionable warning sign is chronic absenteeism: 28.0% of students were chronically absent in 2024-2025, the highest rate among nearby elementary schools and roughly double Costner's 14.2%. The rate has improved sharply from its pandemic peak but remains a serious concern. The school also has the lowest per-pupil spending among comparable schools ($8,750) and rising class sizes. Subgroup results show students with disabilities ranking in the bottom 1% statewide, and English learner ratings have dropped sharply in recent years. Taken together, these patterns point to systemic challenges in attendance, special education support, and upper-elementary instruction that deserve focused attention before students head to middle school.
