Sherwood Elementary is a PK-5 public school in Gastonia, NC, serving 553 students in the Gaston County Schools district, where 99.46% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. After five straight years in the bottom 11% of North Carolina's elementary school rankings, Sherwood jumped from the 5th percentile in 2024-25 to the 27th percentile in 2025-26 — the largest one-year gain among 10 nearby Gaston County elementary schools. The school improved in every reported EOG subject and grade level, with the biggest gains in 4th grade math (+26.4 points), 5th grade science (+24.5), and 5th grade math (+22.1).

Fourth grade is a bright spot: 63.5% of 4th graders scored proficient in math, above the district average of 57.1% and the state average of 61.4%, and 4th grade reading (54.1%) also beat the district average. Statewide subgroup rankings tell a similar positive story for the school's largest groups: economically disadvantaged students and African American students both rank at the 55th percentile, up from the 10th and 12th percentiles, respectively, a year earlier. Early-grade reading, however, remains a serious challenge: only 34.2% of 3rd graders read proficiently, well below the district's 46.4% and the state's 55.6%. Special education students remain a concern at the 4th percentile.

Nearby McAdenville Elementary offers a useful comparison: it serves an almost identical low-income population (98.4% free/reduced-price lunch) but ranks at the 86th percentile and posts far higher proficiency in nearly every subject. Sherwood does not appear to be a good school, but my student and other family members have gone to New Hope, WA Bess and Hawks Nest and by far we have the BEST of the best here. The teachers and staff are top notch, love our kids like their own and truly just want what is best for them! Love them! Close Quote
