Creekside Elementary

Creekside Elementary is a PK–5 public school in Durham Public Schools serving 554 students in southwest Durham, near the Chapel Hill border. Once a solid mid-range school, Creekside has declined steadily over the past decade: in 2015–2016 it ranked in the 66th percentile of North Carolina elementary schools with a 3-star rating, but by 2025–2026 it had fallen to the 14th percentile (1,284 out of 1,492 schools), placing it below nearby Durham peers such as Murray-Massenburg Elementary, Hope Valley Elementary, and Forest View Elementary.

Academically, Creekside trails its district and the state in nearly every subject. On 2025–2026 state tests, average math proficiency across grades 3–5 was about 43%, compared with 57% across Durham Public Schools and 64% statewide; reading proficiency was 42%, versus 52% for the district and 56% for the state. Results are uneven, though: English Learner students and students from low-income households score at or near the very bottom compared with similar students statewide, while other groups at the school perform closer to state averages. Chronic absenteeism affects nearly 3 in 10 students, better than the district average of 36% but far above nearby Chapel Hill–Carrboro schools, and class sizes are growing. The student-teacher ratio has climbed from 12.1 to 15.9 over the past three years.

Creekside sits barely a mile from Ephesus Elementary and Rashkis Elementary, both top-performing schools in the adjacent Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district, ranking in the 88th and 69th percentiles statewide. Those schools serve far fewer low-income families, with free or reduced-price lunch shares of 30% and 48%, compared with 99.5% at Creekside. A more useful comparison may be Southwest Elementary, a Durham Public Schools school about four miles away serving a similarly high-poverty population, which ranks in the 74th percentile with dramatically higher math and reading scores. That gap suggests Creekside's challenges are not inevitable; targeted investments in English-learner support, attendance, and staffing could help reverse a decade of decline.
