Summary

Northern High is a public high school located in Durham, North Carolina, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,334 students. It is part of the Durham Public Schools district, which is ranked 163 out of 242 districts in North Carolina and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The data reveals that Northern High consistently ranks in the bottom half of North Carolina high schools, with a ranking between 502-586 out of 621-641 schools over the past 5 years. The school's performance on End-of-Course (EOC) exams is significantly below the district and state averages across subjects like Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III. For example, in 2024-2025, only 31.9% of Northern High students were proficient or better in Biology EOC, compared to 43.4% for the district and 48.3% for the state. Additionally, Northern High's four-year graduation rate has ranged from 77.5% to 87.7% over the past few years, which is lower than the state average.

In contrast, the nearby Durham School of the Arts, Southern School of Energy and Sustainability, and City of Medicine Academy consistently outperform Northern High on academic metrics, with much higher proficiency rates on EOC exams and significantly higher rankings among North Carolina high schools. The data also suggests that Northern High struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively, with large achievement gaps between different demographic groups.

Open Quote We are so blessed to have such a wonderful school for our son. My oldest graduated from Northern 2 years ago and my youngest is a junior. The teachers and support staff are so loving and caring. Mr Hunt the Principal is the best. My son has a medical condition and is in a wheelchair. I was so scared of high school for him, but Northern has truly made all my fears go away. UKNIGHTED Close Quote
