Open Quote Honestly, DPS isn't great to work for. However, Carrington has THE BEST admin team I've ever worked for, including a great private school and several charter/public schools. I came in expecting to be pushed out after a year or two, but I've instead found a school staff that pursues the best in everyone and genuinely cares. Principal Cheek is phenomenal, values her staff, loves her students, and genuinely expects the best from everyone. She's an excellent leader and the team she's refined is mostly gems with a few rough ones rapidly working their way towards retirement. She has no time for BS and neither do her APs. She's realistic about our situation, identifies realistic steps to improve, and executes them while taking criticism gracefully. I rarely see the APs in their office unless in meetings- they spend as much time as possible on the halls supporting teachers. This is the best school in NC that I've worked at as far as taking discipline issues as seriously as the district will allow, so anticipate some salty parents. However, the APs make a HUGE effort to direct the worst of unreasonable parents off of us and instead advocate for us to only be in meaningful parent-teacher conferences. They also take teacher safety very seriously- if ya know ya know! Close Quote

Open Quote The 8th grade math teachers are wonderful! And the principal is supportive and wants the best for the students. This school has smilar challenges when faced with a diverse student population with many who arrive at the school with low reading level as well as family challenges. With that said, there are many wonderful students and teachers who are thriving at this school! It is hard for any school in NC to get great teachers and keep them due to NC's unwillingness to offer a competitive salary to our teiachers who are highly educated and expected to continue their education for life at their own expemse! When will NC recognize that the problem is NOT with the teachers but rather with NC's lack of support of education. This school may be big but those who work here are dedicated! I am not a parent or a teacher but I am concerned about NC and our children. Close Quote
