Brogden Middle

Brogden Middle is a public school in northeast Durham, NC, serving 753 students in grades 6–8 as part of Durham Public Schools, a district ranked in the lower half of North Carolina's districts. The school serves an extremely economically disadvantaged community, with 99.47% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Academically, Brogden has struggled compared with state averages, though its most recent statewide ranking (572 out of 778 middle schools) represents genuine progress. After sitting at the 9th–15th percentile for most of the past decade, the school climbed to the 26th percentile in 2025–2026 — its best showing in ten years.

Lakewood's chronic absenteeism rate is just 6.8%, versus Brogden's 42.7%. Brogden also spends more per pupil ($12,887 in the most recent reported year) than Rogers-Herr ($11,594) and Shepard Middle ($11,998), though those schools produce stronger outcomes. Still, Brogden outperformed Lucas Middle and Carrington Middle in statewide ranking, and its 7th-grade math proficiency exceeded several higher-ranked schools, including Sherwood Githens Middle and Shepard Middle.
