Summary

West Davidson High is a traditional public high school serving approximately 740 students in grades 9–12 just outside Lexington, NC, within the Davidson County Schools district. The school currently ranks in the middle of the pack statewide (375th out of 662 schools), and its biggest academic challenge is entry-level math: only 28.9% of students scored proficient in Math I in 2025–2026, compared to 42.1% statewide — a gap that has persisted for the past four years. Yet students who reach upper-level coursework are thriving, with 77% proficient in Math III, well above the state's 68.9%.

West Davidson is also a school of sharp contrasts when it comes to student outcomes. Its most recent results show remarkable improvement for Special Education students, whose subgroup ranking jumped from the 13th to the 76th percentile statewide in just two years, while Gifted and Talented students now perform at the 82nd percentile. However, outcomes for Hispanic students remain a major concern, with that subgroup ranking in the bottom fifth statewide for three consecutive years. In the sciences, the school posts solid Biology results (61.3% proficient, above the state's 58.5%), while English II proficiency (55.2%) trails the state's 64.6%.

The school's clearest advantage, though, is attendance: chronic absenteeism is just 11.4%, less than half the state's 24.2% and dramatically better than Lexington Senior High School's 39.4%. Graduation rates have climbed from 76.9% to 87.1% over the past four years but still sit slightly below the district's 88.3% and the state's 88.8%. Measured against nearby schools, North Davidson High posts considerably better Math I proficiency and a 91.9% graduation rate, while Central Davidson High looks nearly identical to West Davidson on most metrics.
