East Columbus Junior-Senior High in Lake Waccamaw, NC serves 576 students in grades 7 through 12, combining middle and high school in one rural school under Columbus County Schools, a district ranked in the bottom third of North Carolina. The school itself has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of state public schools over the past decade, most recently landing in the 19th percentile. The graduation rate has also slipped from 91.3% in 2021–22 to 87.2%, now below the state rate of 88.8% and Whiteville High’s 90.3%. Encouragingly, advanced math is a bright spot: Math III proficiency approaches the state average, and disabled students ranked in the 72nd percentile statewide in a recent year. The picture is not uniform, however, as gifted students rank near the very bottom of North Carolina schools. Together, these patterns point to school-level conditions such as attendance, engagement, and supports rather than student potential as the defining factors behind the school’s outcomes.
