Asheville PEAK Academy is a very small K-7 school in Asheville, NC, serving 161 students. Unusually, it operates as its own district rather than belonging to a larger system such as Asheville City Schools or Buncombe County Schools, which means its scores stand alone with no district average to cushion them. It is not an inevitable outcome of poverty: nearby West Buncombe Elementary serves a very high-poverty student body and still ranks at the 87th percentile. Asheville PEAK Academy's upper-grade math success and its favorable structural conditions give it a foundation to build on, but until early-literacy results stabilize, the school's overall profile is likely to remain in the bottom quarter.
