Summary

Francine Delany New School is a small K–8 school in west Asheville, NC, serving 193 students across ten grade levels, and it is reported as its own school district rather than belonging to Buncombe County Schools or Asheville City Schools. With a 12.8:1 student-teacher ratio and often fewer than 20 students per grade, the school was once a strong performer—ranking in the 80th–88th percentile as recently as 2018–2019—but has since declined to the 43rd percentile (2 stars) in 2025–2026.

The most striking pattern is a divide between subjects and grade levels. Reading proficiency has consistently beaten the state average: 8th-grade reading reached 72.7% proficiency in 2025–2026 versus 56.1% statewide, and 8th-grade science reached 81.8% versus the state’s 68.6%. Early-grade math, however, is a trouble spot—3rd-grade math proficiency was just 38.1% versus the state’s 66.4%, and dramatically below nearby West Buncombe Elementary (86.9%) and Claxton Elementary (70.3%). Compared with other local K–8 options, Francine Delany posted much stronger 8th-grade reading (72.7% vs. 60.0%) than Mountain City Public Montessori, though Mountain City had a substantial edge in 3rd-grade reading (73.7% vs. 52.4%). Asheville PEAK Academy, less than a mile away, ranked far lower overall at the 15th percentile.

Two recent trends are worth watching. Chronic absenteeism jumped from 7.6% in 2023–2024 to 17.4% in 2024–2025, though that still sits below the state’s 24.2%. And a gender gap has emerged: in 2025–2026, female students ranked in the 61st percentile statewide while male students fell to the 33rd. Notably, West Buncombe Elementary—with a 98.1% free/reduced lunch rate—still ranked in the 87th percentile, showing that strong results are possible even in nearby schools serving high-poverty populations. Given Francine Delany’s small cohorts, individual classes can cause big year-to-year swings, but early-grade math struggles, the attendance jump, and the gender gap all deserve close attention.
