Summary

Enka Middle is a 7th- and 8th-grade school in Candler, NC, serving 588 students in a very high-poverty feeder pattern within Buncombe County Schools. Its current statewide rating is 2 stars, at the 34th percentile and 515th out of 778 middle schools — a step back from the pre-2020 period, when it consistently ranked near the middle of North Carolina schools. Most of that decline has come since 2021, and the school has not yet returned to its earlier trajectory.

Academically, it trails both district and state averages in most subjects. Math gaps are the widest: 7th grade proficiency is 44.5% (state: 56.2%) and 8th grade is 40.9% (state: 53.0%). Reading lags by roughly 10 points, while 8th grade science comes closest to the state average (66.9% versus 68.6%). Enka is not the area's lowest middle school — Erwin Middle is below it in nearly every subject — but it is far from the strongest. Nearby North Buncombe Middle serves a similarly high-poverty population yet posted 8th grade math proficiency of 66.5% and reading of 67.7%. Per-pupil spending between the two schools is nearly identical, pointing to instruction and attendance culture, not funding, as the key differences.

The biggest non-academic warning sign is chronic absenteeism: 28.9% of students were chronically absent in both 2024-2025 and 2023-2024, roughly 10 points above the district average. That rate is well above the 19.6% at its own feeder, Enka Intermediate, and the 19.4% at North Buncombe Middle. Outcomes also vary sharply across student groups: English language learners and gifted students both rank near the bottom statewide (10th and 8th percentiles), while special education services are a relative strength (59th percentile). Enka Middle's challenges are real, but nearby schools serving similarly high-poverty populations show they are workable, not inevitable.
