Summary

Lincoln Elementary is a Pre-K–5 public school in Leland, NC, serving 738 students as part of Brunswick County Schools, where nearly all students (99.6%) qualify for free/reduced-price lunch. The school currently ranks in the 36th percentile statewide (961st out of 1,492 North Carolina elementary schools) with a 2-star rating — below the state median but above several nearby schools like Sunset Park Elementary, R Freeman School of Engineering, and D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, which rank in the bottom 20% of the state.

The most telling comparison, however, is to Belville Elementary, a Brunswick County school just 4.4 miles away with nearly identical demographics and economic disadvantage. Despite serving essentially the same student population, Belville significantly outpaces Lincoln in upper-grade reading and math. In 2025-26, 5th-grade reading proficiency at Lincoln was 39.4% compared to 63.8% at Belville — a gap of nearly 25 percentage points — and 4th-grade math was 51.9% versus 71.5%. Reading is Lincoln's biggest academic weakness overall, with proficiency falling further behind state averages as students advance: 3rd graders trail the state by about 8 points, while 5th graders trail by about 16 points. Math shows a different pattern — 3rd-grade math is actually a bright spot, outperforming state averages in recent years, but that early strength fades dramatically by 4th and 5th grades.

There are encouraging signs worth noting. Chronic absenteeism improved sharply from 27.4% in 2023-24 to 17.1% in 2024-25, now better than both the district (24.5%) and state (24.2%) averages. Lincoln's low-income students also perform near the statewide median when compared to their economic peers, ranking around the 47th–51st percentile in recent years. However, the school's Gifted and Talented students rank in the bottom decile statewide (9th percentile), suggesting the school may need to examine how effectively it identifies and challenges its highest-ability learners. For parents, Lincoln is a high-poverty school with solid attendance and some relative strengths, but its persistent upper-elementary reading gap and the large academic divide from Belville Elementary are the clearest areas demanding attention.
