Summary

The International School at Gregory serves 514 students in grades K-8 in Wilmington, NC, and is part of New Hanover County Schools. Nearly all students (99.4%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, making this a very high-poverty school. The school holds a 3-star rating and currently ranks 700th out of 1,492 North Carolina schools, placing it in the 53rd percentile statewide. That is a dramatic turnaround from 2015–16, when it ranked in the 2nd percentile; it climbed to the 67th percentile by 2023–24.

Academically, the school is a standout compared with its immediate neighborhood. Several nearby schools with almost identical poverty levels rank near the very bottom of the state, including R Freeman School of Engineering (last overall), Sunset Park Elementary (1,448th), and Forest Hills Global Elementary (1,234th) — while The International School at Gregory sits in the top half statewide. Its greatest strength is in middle school: 79.3% of 8th graders are proficient in math, versus 60.1% for the district, and 8th-grade reading and science also outperform district and state averages by wide margins. Early grades, however, lag behind — only 40.4% of 3rd graders are proficient in reading, compared with 55.6% statewide — and 3rd-grade scores have declined for two straight years. The school's overall ranking also masks equity gaps: students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds rank in the 7th percentile statewide, a real concern given that nearly the entire student body is economically disadvantaged.

One of the school's biggest strengths is attendance. Chronic absenteeism is just 15.1%, roughly half the rate of nearby R Freeman School of Engineering (40.6%) and Forest Hills Global Elementary (39.3%), and well below the state average of 24.2%. The school also spends generously at $18,192 per student. While overall momentum has plateaued recently, The International School at Gregory remains an unusually strong high-poverty school. If it can improve early-grade instruction and close subgroup gaps, it has the potential to become one of North Carolina's best examples of high-poverty school success.
